## Start with the item and its existing limit

A replacement part for ExampleAir’s MSN-EXAMPLE-014 has been delayed. Maintenance control has the deferred defect open, the CAMO has a maintenance slot to rearrange, and flight operations needs to know whether the aircraft can remain in the schedule. These are fictional circumstances; a delayed delivery alone does not establish entitlement to an extension.

Start with the actual minimum equipment list (MEL) item, its category, the technical log entry and the current rectification limit. Use the MEL rectification interval extension form when preparing the evidence for a one-time RIE under ORO.MLR.105(f). The master minimum equipment list (MMEL), the operator’s MEL and its extension procedure provide the boundaries for the assessment.

| Situation                                                                            | Route to examine                                                                                                   |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| An inoperative item is approaching its MEL rectification limit | Arrange rectification under the effective rectification programme required by ORO.MLR.105(e). |
| An exceptional event has prevented timely rectification of a category B, C or D item | Check every condition of the one-time extension procedure in ORO.MLR.105(f). Category A is outside that provision. |
| The proposed operation is outside MEL constraints but within MMEL constraints | ORO.MLR.105(j) is a separate route requiring specific case-by-case authority approval and its own conditions. |

The starting rule is point (e):

[ORO.MLR.105(e) (full rule text)](https://avioverse.aero/regulations/easa/air-ops/part-oro/subpart-mlr/oro-mlr-105) Minimum equipment list

> (e) The operator shall:
>
> (1) establish rectification intervals for each inoperative instrument, item of equipment or function listed in the MEL. The rectification interval in the MEL shall not be less restrictive than the corresponding rectification interval in the MMEL;
>
> (2) establish an effective rectification programme;
>
> (3) only operate the aircraft after expiry of the rectification interval specified in the MEL when:
>
> (i) the defect has been rectified; or
>
> (ii) the rectification interval has been extended in accordance with (f).

Quoted word for word from Regulation (EU) No 965/2012, Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, 27 Mar 2026 revision.

A requested date is a proposal. It does not change the existing limit. Keep the current due date visible while the request is being assessed.

## The six conditions for a one-time extension

[ORO.MLR.105(f) (full rule text)](https://avioverse.aero/regulations/easa/air-ops/part-oro/subpart-mlr/oro-mlr-105) Minimum equipment list

> (f) Subject to approval of the competent authority, the operator may use a procedure for the one time extension of category B, C and D rectification intervals, provided that:
>
> (1) the extension of the rectification interval is within the scope of the MMEL for the aircraft type;
>
> (2) the extension of the rectification interval is, as a maximum, of the same duration as the rectification interval specified in the MEL;
>
> (3) the rectification interval extension is not used as a normal means of conducting MEL item rectification and is used only when events beyond the control of the operator have precluded rectification;
>
> (4) a description of specific duties and responsibilities for controlling extensions is established by the operator;
>
> (5) the competent authority is notified of any extension of the applicable rectification interval; and
>
> (6) a plan to accomplish the rectification at the earliest opportunity is established.

Quoted word for word from Regulation (EU) No 965/2012, Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, 27 Mar 2026 revision.

Read the opening together with all six conditions. The procedure needs competent authority approval; the extension is one-time and limited to categories B, C and D. Its duration cannot exceed the MEL rectification interval, and it must remain within the MMEL scope. A new request cannot be used to turn that one-time provision into successive extensions.

The maximum duration is a ceiling. Point (f)(6) still calls for rectification at the earliest opportunity. A plan that simply uses all available extension time without examining an earlier repair opportunity does not explain that choice.

## Why the form asks what it asks

The form brings the evidence and the decision together. Its question groups serve different purposes; ticking a confirmation is useful only when the supporting information justifies it.

**Aircraft, defect and source records.** The aircraft and log references connect the request to one inoperative item. The MEL category establishes whether point (f) is the relevant route. The MEL page and deferred defect evidence let each reviewer examine the same case. These identifiers are practical recording choices, not a prescribed questionnaire.

**Current limit, proposed limit and extension history.** The dates make the requested additional time visible. Read them with the actual interval in the MEL, the MMEL scope and any earlier extension. These checks address the opening of point (f) and points (f)(1)–(2); the form does not calculate or grant a permitted extension.

**Procedure and responsibilities.** The procedure reference identifies the basis on which the request will be considered. Confirm that it covers the case and assigns the duties required by point (f)(4). The form’s review sections help organise that work; the job titles suggested below are practical assignments, not prescribed roles.

**Exceptional circumstances and evidence.** Explain what happened, when it happened and how it prevented rectification despite the arrangements made. A parts order, delivery update or maintenance correspondence can support that account. Point (f)(3) requires events beyond the operator’s control and excludes routine reliance on extensions. A statement that more time would be convenient does not address that test.

**Earliest rectification opportunity.** Identify the parts, maintenance capability, proposed location and timing needed to carry out the work. These practical details make the plan under point (f)(6) assessable. Record why an earlier option is unavailable, and revisit the plan if parts or capacity become available sooner.

## Reviews, notification and follow-through

A useful division of the written reviews is:

- The **flight operations post holder** examines operational effects, other deferred items and the procedures and limitations relevant to the proposed operation.
- The **continuing airworthiness manager** examines the maintenance effects, requested limit and earliest practicable rectification arrangements, using the maintainer’s information.
- The **compliance monitoring manager** checks the procedural basis, responsibilities and extension conditions, then records the authorised decision, revised limit and evidence of authority notification.

These are suggested assignments for the form’s three follow-up sections. Assign each section to one workspace member according to the operator’s procedure. Under point (f)(5), the authority must be notified of every extension. That notification is distinct from the authority’s approval of the procedure; point (f) does not describe it as a separate approval of each RIE.

In the fictional ExampleAir case, ExampleMRO supplies the delivery update and earliest available maintenance slot. A workspace member records that evidence. Operations reviews the effect on the planned flights, while the CAMO checks the repair arrangements. Their review should explain whether the evidence supports the exceptional-circumstances test; the supplier’s delay message is only one input.

The form’s follow-up sections are written records assigned to workspace members. Each assignee records **Approve** or **Request changes** with a comment, or **Not required** with a reason. These responses record internal handling; they do not remove a condition in point (f). Suppliers and maintenance providers outside the workspace do not fill in the form. Retain references to their evidence and to the eventual rectification record. Selecting an evidence type in the form does not upload that document.

## The separate case-by-case route

Point (j) concerns operation outside the MEL’s constraints while remaining within the MMEL’s constraints:

[ORO.MLR.105(j) (full rule text)](https://avioverse.aero/regulations/easa/air-ops/part-oro/subpart-mlr/oro-mlr-105) Minimum equipment list

> (j) Subject to a specific case-by-case approval by the competent authority, the operator may operate an aircraft with inoperative instruments, items of equipment or functions outside the constraints of the MEL but within the constraints of the MMEL, provided that:
>
> (1) the concerned instruments, items of equipment or functions are within the scope of the MMEL as defined in point (a);
>
> (2) the approval is not used as a normal means of conducting operations outside the constraints of the approved MEL and is used only when events beyond the control of the operator have precluded the MEL compliance;
>
> (3) a description of specific duties and responsibilities for controlling the operation of the aircraft under such approval is established by the operator; and
>
> (4) a plan to rectify the inoperative instruments, items of equipment or functions or to return operating the aircraft under the MEL constraints at the earliest opportunity is established.

Quoted word for word from Regulation (EU) No 965/2012, Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, 27 Mar 2026 revision.

This is a different decision from using the procedure in point (f). It requires specific authority approval for the case, as well as the MMEL scope, exceptional-circumstances, responsibility and recovery-plan conditions quoted above. Recording an RIE request does not supply that approval.

## Keep the decision with its evidence

Use the form to keep the request, review comments, decision and notification reference connected. Maintain the current limit and the actual rectification evidence in the operator’s applicable records and procedures. The wider manual and management-system context is in [Part-ORO operations manual and management system](https://avioverse.aero/guides/easa-operations-manual-management-system); the management and maintenance handover is in [CAMO, CAO and Part-145: roles and responsibilities](https://avioverse.aero/guides/easa-camo-continuing-airworthiness-management-organisation).

The quoted rule is ORO.MLR.105 in Annex III (Part-ORO) to Regulation (EU) No 965/2012, checked against the EASA Easy Access Rules for Air Operations, **2026-03-27 revision**. The practical evidence prompts and suggested review roles above are ways to organise the assessment, not additional regulatory conditions.

ORO.MLR.105(f) covers category B, C and D rectification intervals. Category A is outside that provision. The procedure needs competent authority approval, and all six conditions in point (f) must be met.

### How long can an MEL rectification interval extension be?

The extension must be within the aircraft type’s MMEL scope and cannot be longer than the rectification interval specified in the MEL. It is a one-time extension, not a fresh interval that can be extended repeatedly.

### Does each RIE need separate authority approval?

Point (f) makes use of the extension procedure subject to competent authority approval and requires notification of every extension. The separate route in point (j) requires specific case-by-case approval for operation outside MEL constraints but within MMEL constraints.

### Can an RIE be used routinely when a maintenance slot is inconvenient?

No. Point (f)(3) excludes normal use for MEL item rectification. Events beyond the operator’s control must have prevented rectification, and point (f)(6) requires a plan to rectify at the earliest opportunity.

### Does completing the Avioverse form extend the interval?

No. The form records the request, evidence, reviews and decision under the operator’s procedure. An internal Approve response does not supply authority approval of the procedure or establish that all extension conditions have been met.
